What is a Pomsky?

A Pomsky is a designer hybrid dog breed resulting from the cross between a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian. Due to the significant size difference between these two breeds—Huskies typically weigh 35–60 pounds, while Pomeranians are much smaller at 3–10 pounds—natural breeding is not feasible. Instead, reputable breeders use a husky female and Pomeranian male for artificial insemination to produce healthy litters. Pomskies are highly sought after for their striking appearance, often resembling a miniature Husky with fluffy fur, piercing blue or multi-colored eyes, and a compact yet sturdy build. Their temperament can vary, but they generally inherit the intelligence and energy of Huskies along with the playful, affectionate nature of Pomeranians.

How Much is a Pomsky?

The price of a Pomsky can vary significantly based on several factors, including coat color, size, markings and most importantly the heath testing the breeder does.  On average, a well-bred Pomsky from an ethical breeder ranges between $2,500 and $5000. Coat colors, such as merle, pure white, or striking blue-eyed variations, may command higher prices along with size. Pomskies can display predictable coloring patterns similar to their parent breeds, but there is also a wide variety of unique combinations, making each dog distinct. Pomskies are known for their photogenic appearance, which contributes to their popularity and demand. Additionally, smaller Pomskies (sometimes referred to as “toy” or “mini” Pomskies) are often in higher demand and may be priced at a premium.. Some Pomskies may resemble larger than normal Pomeranians, highlighting the size variability within the breed. Pomskies are considered designer dogs although the APKC is working toward establishing the breed and standard but currently they are not recognized as an official breed. It’s important to research breeders thoroughly to ensure they conduct proper health testing and ethical breeding practices, as lower-priced Pomskies may come from irresponsible sources.

What Does the Cost of a Pomsky Puppy Include?

When purchasing a Pomsky from Platinum Pomskies, the price includes several essential components to ensure your puppy is healthy, well-cared-for, and ready for its new home. Each puppy comes with parents embark dna testing.  Before leaving, every puppy undergoes a thorough health examination by a licensed veterinarian to confirm it is in optimal condition. They receive age-appropriate vaccinations and are dewormed at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks to protect against parasites. Additionally, all puppies come with a 3-year genetic health guarantee, providing peace of mind against hereditary conditions. Both the Dam (mother) and Sire (father) undergo Embark DNA testing, screening for 265+ genetic health conditions to ensure only the healthiest dogs are bred. Each puppy comes with 30 days free health insurance. Understanding the parent breed pomsky puppies’ background is important for predicting their appearance and temperament, as the characteristics of the parent breeds, such as Husky and Pomeranian, play a significant role in the offspring.

Finally, new owners receive a puppy care package, which includes food samples (be sure to check the dog’s food bag for feeding guidelines and portion recommendations), a blanket, toys, and other essentials to help the puppy transition smoothly into its new home.

What Reputation Should a Pomsky Breeder have?

Pomsky breeders play a pivotal role in shaping the quality and reputation of this unique breed. As a mixed breed dog created by crossing a Siberian Husky with a Pomeranian, the Pomsky’s popularity has soared thanks to its striking looks and playful temperament. However, because Pomskies are a very recent breed, the standards and practices among breeders can vary widely, making it essential for pet parents to do their homework before choosing where to get their Pomsky puppy.

A responsible breeder will always prioritize the health and well-being of their Pomsky puppies. This means conducting comprehensive health testing on both parent breeds. By carefully selecting healthy dogs for breeding, reputable breeders help reduce the risk of inherited health problems and ensure that each Pomsky puppy has the best possible start in life.

Beyond health testing, a good breeder will also focus on proper socialization and early care. Pomsky puppies should be raised in a nurturing environment where they are handled regularly, exposed to various sights and sounds, and given high-quality nutrition. This early attention helps shape a well-adjusted, confident dog that will thrive in its new home.

When searching for a Pomsky breeder, look for those who are affiliated with respected organizations dedicated to the breed, such as the American Pomsky Kennel Club (APKC) or Pomsky owner association. These groups set high standards for breeding practices and health testing, offering peace of mind to pet parents that their new puppy comes from a responsible source.

It’s equally important to be cautious of breeders who cut corners or prioritize profit over the welfare of their dogs. Puppy mills and backyard breeders may not perform necessary health testing or provide adequate care, leading to Pomsky puppies with health issues or behavioral problems. Choosing a responsible breeder not only supports ethical breeding but also helps ensure your Pomsky puppy will be a healthy, happy companion for years to come.

To evaluate a breeder’s reputation, consider their experience, transparency about their breeding program, and feedback from previous puppy buyers. Reputable breeders are open about their health testing protocols, breeding goals, and the care they provide for their dogs. They are also available to answer questions and offer ongoing support to new pet parents

In summary, finding a trustworthy Pomsky breeder requires time, research, and a commitment to supporting ethical breeding practices. By choosing a breeder who values health, temperament, and responsible breeding, you’ll be giving your Pomsky puppy the best possible foundation for a long, joyful life as part of your family.

How Does the Waiting List Work?

At Platinum Pomskies, our waiting list process is designed to be transparent and fair to all prospective Pomsky owners. Once a pregnancy is confirmed in one of our breeding females, we open our waitlist to interested families. To secure a spot, a non-refundable $500 deposit is required, which is later applied toward the full purchase price of the puppy. Deposits are processed in the order they are received, meaning earlier deposits get priority when it comes time to select a puppy.

After the puppies are born, we provide updates with photos and videos as they grow. It’s important to note that even pomsky puppies from the same litter can vary widely in appearance and temperament due to their mixed heritage.

When they reach 5 weeks old, families on the waitlist are contacted in the order of their deposits to choose their preferred puppy based on temperament, color, and gender (if they have a preference). Pomsky puppies born in the same litter may show significant differences in size, coat, and color, making each selection unique. The remaining balance is due before the puppy leaves our care at 8 weeks of age, after passing a final health check.

How Long Will I Have to Wait for a Puppy?

Wait times for a Pomsky puppy can vary depending on breeding schedules, demand, and the specific traits you’re looking for (such as coat color or size). Typically, families can expect to welcome their dream Pomsky in within 1-6 months depending on particular preferences. Since Pomsky litters are not always available year-round, we recommend joining the waitlist as early as possible if you’re committed to bringing one of these special dogs into your home.

How Do You Breed a Husky with a Pomeranian

Breeding a Husky with a Pomeranian is a complex process due to the extreme size difference between the two breeds. Natural breeding is not safe or practical when breeding F1, so reputable breeders rely on artificial insemination (AI). Due to the size difference between the breeds, natural breeding is not feasible. Pomskies are bred through controlled breeding practices to ensure the health and safety of both parents and puppies. This involves collecting semen from a male Pomeranian and artificially inseminating a female Husky under veterinary supervision. Many reputable breeders are now working on 4th and 5th generations and can breed Pomsky to Pomsky.

Beyond the breeding method itself, responsible Pomsky breeders conduct extensive health and genetic testing on both parents before mating. At Platinum Pomskies, we use Embark DNA testing to screen for 165+ genetic health conditions, ensuring that only the healthiest dogs contribute to the gene pool. Additionally, temperament and conformation are carefully evaluated to produce puppies that are not only physically sound but also well-balanced in personality. Breeders often aim to produce smaller dogs by selecting parent breeds with desirable size traits.

How Big Do Pomskies Get?

Pomskies are considered small to medium-sized dogs, though their exact size can vary depending on their genetic makeup. First-generation (F1) Pomskies—those with one purebred Husky parent and one purebred Pomeranian parent—typically are the hardest to gage in weight  12-50 pounds and stand 12~18 inches tall at the shoulder. F1b Pomskies (an F1 Pomsky backcrossed with a Pomeranian) tend to be smaller, averaging 15–25 pounds. Some breeders also produce even smaller “toy” or “mini” Pomskies, which typically come from many generations down may weigh as little as 10–15 pounds. A full grown Pomsky usually falls within this range, displaying a compact, husky-like appearance with distinctive facial features and coat patterns.

Because Pomskies are a hybrid breed, their size can be somewhat unpredictable, even within the same litter. Adult pomskies are generally small to medium-sized dogs, with a variety of physical and temperamental traits that reflect both parent breeds. Reputable breeders will provide estimates based on the parents’ sizes, but there are no absolute guarantees. Some breeders specifically aim to produce smaller dogs for families seeking more manageable pets.

Pomskies resemble miniature wolves or small huskies, with many owners drawn to their husky-like markings and features. They are often described as miniature wolves due to their striking resemblance to their husky ancestors. Pomskies are sometimes referred to as small huskies, making them suitable for those who love the husky look but want a smaller companion. Their appearance is defined by husky-like facial features and coat patterns, which contribute to their unique and photogenic appeal.

Do Pomskies Shed?

Yes, Pomskies do shed, as they inherit a thick double coat from both Huskies and Pomeranians. The pomsky’s coat can vary in coat type, including standard, plush, and wooly varieties. Their fluffy coat is dense, soft, and visually appealing, with thick fur that provides insulation in colder climates. Their shedding is moderate year-round, with heavier “blowing coat” periods typically occurring twice a year (usually in spring and fall) when they shed their undercoat. Pomskies tend to shed heavily during these times, making regular grooming especially important. Regular grooming—brushing 2–3 times per week—can help manage loose fur and keep their coat healthy. Different coat types require different grooming routines and maintenance, but like most dogs, Pomskies benefit from regular brushing to keep their coat healthy and manageable. While no dog is truly hypoallergenic, frequent brushing and occasional professional grooming can minimize allergens in the home.

How Long Do Pomskies Live?

With proper care, a healthy Pomsky can live 12–15 years. Their lifespan is influenced by several factors, including genetics, diet, exercise, and routine veterinary care. Providing high-quality dog food that meets their nutritional needs is essential for their overall health. Meeting your Pomsky’s exercise needs through daily walks and playtime helps prevent boredom and supports their fitness. Because they are a mixed breed, they may benefit from hybrid vigor, which can reduce the risk of some hereditary health issues common in purebred dogs. However, responsible breeding practices—such as the genetic health testing we perform at Platinum Pomskies—are crucial in ensuring long, healthy lives for these dogs.

Can I Breed My Pomsky?

All puppies from Platinum Pomskies are sold with a strict spay/neuter contract unless prior arrangements are made with an approved breeder. This policy is in place to maintain the integrity and health of the Pomsky breed. Ethical breeding requires extensive health testing, knowledge of genetics, and a commitment to improving the breed—not just producing puppies for profit. Breeding for extremely small sizes, such as the teacup pomsky, raises significant health risks and ethical concerns, as these dogs are prone to more medical problems due to their size.

Uncontrolled breeding can lead to health problems, temperament issues, and overpopulation, which is why we carefully screen anyone interested in breeding their Pomsky. Destructive behavior can also arise from separation anxiety or lack of stimulation, highlighting the importance of responsible ownership. If you are considering breeding, we encourage you to contact us first to discuss the responsibilities, costs, and ethical considerations involved. Proper training, including the use of positive reinforcement, is essential to ensure Pomskies are well-behaved and thrive in their homes.
